Concealers are a great make up tool – they cover, disguise, protect, hide, or shield red blemishes or imperfections.

you can pretty much make any blemish, scar, freckle or imperfection appear invisible.

However, most people I would say are not aware of

-how to use them effectively

OR

-how to choose the correct one

Hopefully I can help you understand a little more about them.

So just to help out a little -

here are some helpful hints and facts.

Plus frequently asked questions

answered for you.

They come in many forms and colours.

Different shades of browns, to cater for all skin colours.
AND

Green is a common but not so well known concealer, that is actually quite useful.

Green is known for its ability to neutralise the redness of pimples or redness in the skin.
We all know how hard it is to conceal an unwanted pimple with skin-coloured foundation, don’t we!

Just dab on a little green with a fine makeup brush, for example from a cover stick.

Apply to pimple or red area on the skin and then sweep some powder over the top.

The pimple will be barely noticeable unless it is closely examined.

How to choose the right one for you.

Try to go for a shade lighter than you would buy in a foundation.

The spot you are trying to cover up is darker than your normal skin colour so a lighter one will then help the area blend in with the rest of your complexion.

Test different shades and request samples to try on your skin.Make sure you have the right colour to suit your skin tone.

What type do I use where?

Usually, a creamier, liquid concealer is best used around the eye area and on dry skin.

A thick one is good for those areas to cover up on your facial skin.

Liquid is a good choice for a large area like under the eyes.

Liquid is especially good for people with a dry skin type, as it won’t sit on top of the skin, it will blend into it.

Pimples or scars are best kept under a solid concealer like a pencil or a stick.

This will hide them and give a more complete coverage as they are thick.

Thin, liquid concealer will look almost transparent on these areas, generally speaking.

Application

Apply with a make-up brush with a small tip and dab into the spot required, do not rub as this will not blend it in properly.

Always blend into the skin so that whether you are putting it on top or beneath the foundation, it is not easily seen.

Don’t forget to set with powder, (usually translucent) to prevent creasing and rubbing off when touched.

On top or underneath?

A lot of people are always wondering at what stage they should apply concealer.

Before or after foundation?

Well, it depends! Some foundations work better if the concealer is underneath, and some it doesn’t really affect, if you put it on over the foundation.

Here’s a theory..

If you are using a liquid (creamy) or a solid (stick) foundation, concealer works well afterwards.

It has the same effect as those foundations and will blend well on top.

If you are using a cream-to-powder foundation, then it will work best if you apply it first.

Then the concealer won’t spoil the effect of the powder finish in a small spot, this would make it stand out more.

With or without foundation?

It’s simply personal preference when it comes to having concealer or foundation or a bit of both.

There is no right or wrong way.

Sometimes concealer is enough to make your skin look flawless on its own..

On the other hand, so is foundation..

It depends on you and your skin, and what you prefer.

Foundation and concealer together is always a good mix, given you have your colours matched up well.

Powder, however is a necessary item to both in most cases because it will set finished touch up, and makeup, and it won’t come off quite as easily.

Tips to remember

*Do not apply straight from stick, tube or pencil. This will be too much and the result will be too heavy. Take a small dab on your finger or make up brush and apply from there.

*Concealer needs to be a little lighter than the foundation, but not too light, because it can look even worse and make the area stand out more.

*Always tap on to skin, do not rub in or drag along the skin.

*Keep in mind you need to consider where you’re going..

Day light and artificial light are completely different and concealers, like foundations, or any other make-up really, will look different in both lights in comparison.

*Applying with a small tipped concealer brush is usually best, then you can use your finger to dab it in.

*Green neutralises redness in the skin.

*Practice makes perfect.

*Blending is the key.

*Everyone has to deal with acne, bags or uneven skin tone at some stage in their life.

Think yourself lucky that there’s something you can do to cover it up!
