Aromatherapy and Massage

Aromatherapy oils may sound pretty harmless, but if used improperly, they can have unwanted side effects such as headaches and nausea. Real aromatherapy oils have the botanical name of the essential oil.  For example peppermint’s botanical name is Mentha piperita.

Some Essential oils have two or three botanical names.

Lemongrass has two- Cymbopogon citratus and Cymbopogon flexuosus.

Lavender has three- Lavandula veraLavandula angustifola and Lavandula officinalis.

Essential oils are extremely safe and helpful if used correctly and by following the instructions.

Different ways to use aromatherapy oils at home are:

  • - in hot steamy water to inhale.
  • - in an oil burner, in the bath, in a cream or lotion.

In a salon essential oils are used in an aromatherapy massage.

The appropriate aromatherapy oils are picked individually for your current physical and emotional state.  Essential oils should always be used with extreme care and used along with the instructions.

Remember.. you must mix essential oils with water.

They are extremely potent in large doses and need to be diluted.  For example fill an oil burner with water and add three drops of essential oil.

They are also diluted in a bath, because they are put into the water, and with steam inhalation as well.

In aromatherapy massage – the oils are mixed with a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil. Only a small proportion should be essential oils.

I advise that if you are going to use essential oils, you should read up a bit on them first – (there’s too much information for me to put on here!)

For example, if you feel like you need to relax, put some lavender oil in a bath or an oil burner and it should soon calm you down.

Massage

When giving your friend, family member or loved one a massage, you are obviously not expected to give a professional massage that you would receive in a Salon, or massage center. After all, the qualified beauty therapist has attended massage school, and uses the correct massage therapy techniques on a massage table!

However, some things can be taken into consideration to help you out a little.

  • -When massaging legs, arms and torso, massage predominantly towards the heart to increase and promote blood flow. As veins are the closest to the skin, if pressure is being applied in a direction away from the heart, you are forcing the blood to go in the opposite direction.

  • -To link movements, just glide hands over the area to get back to the starting position without applying any pressure.
  • -If the person is ticklish in a particular area, rather than avoiding it, try applying a firmer pressure and it will feel less ticklish.
  • -Do not apply a large amount of pressure on the back where the kidneys are, pushing on the kidneys can be painful and may cause some internal problem if too much pressure is applied.
  • -Try not to apply too much pressure on the popliteal (the back of the knee) this is a very sensitive area and it can hurt if too much pressure is applied.
  • -If you are to hold the head and turn and tug slightly whilst lying on their stomach, be careful not to turn it sharply or quickly or too far, a slight movement is all it needs and you don’t even need to lift it, consider how your own head can move and how you would feel with someone moving you in the same way.
Some good oils to use are -

  • Sweet almond oil
  • Jojoba oils
  • Coconut oil
  • Soya oil
  • Apricot kernel oil
  • Wheat germ oil
