Skin care is something that is practiced around the world in many different ways and forms.  According to what parents say, what people on TV say, what movie stars and famous people apparently use.

These are all well and good if they work for you but here’s my opinion on skincare – in case you don’t know the first thing about it!!!

First of all, you are never too young to start caring for and looking after your skin, especially your face, as this is the most visible and problematic part of your skin. My way of thinking is.. If you’re old enough to ask about it and want to look after your skin, you’re old enough to do it! (In the correct manner of course!)

Generally, things you see on TV are not really good for your skin at all. Television advertising, to my mind, is just a ploy to get money from people who don’t know the first thing about skin care. You are better off going to a well known or highly rated beauty salon and asking about it there (Speaking from personal experience).

A beauty salon where you can get facials and buy skin care products is probably the best bet.

Most highly rated and highly recognised Beauty Salons are looking to give you the best product for your skin.  Although they are more expensive, they last a lot longer and you will see much better results than a supermarket brand and even some chemist brands.

Also, try and avoid brands that are predominantly make up manufacturers, unless highly recommended by a trusted source.  Even though they might have the best make up in the world, if their make up is the main thing, then the skin care comes second.  They are, quite generally, as poor as supermarket brands.  They are using the skin care for money making, because their success in make up has already rated them highly.

The best advice I can give you for skin care,  is that you first need to get a skin diagnosis from a Beauty Salon.  Generally they are free, and give their view on what you should be using for your skin.  All brands are different so look around for the best for you.  If you are lacking in the money department, the Therapist will give you the best option, of what you need the most.

Skin care - face massage

Skin care - face massage

Generally the order of necessity is..

  1. Cleanser
  2. Moisturiser
  3. Toner [some skin care ranges have toners and some do not.]
  4. Eye cleanser #
  5. Eye moisturiser #
  6. Exfoliant
  7. Masque

#(the skin around your eyes is more delicate that that on your face and needs a lighter product, otherwise they can swell or get milia or even acne from prolonged usage of heavy products).

These things are must haves in  skin care, they all work together to do the best for your skin. The masque you can live without, but it’s nice to pamper yourself with one every once in a while!

Facial kits

Facial that you buy in stores are fine to use, however, be careful to use them as instructed.

These kits are not made to be used every day, they are usually things for teenagers or kids to do for fun.
Use once a month, or once every two weeks at the most. They are not bad for your skin but they aren’t overly good either. Generally, just use them as instructed on the package.
Over usage could result in acne and irritation.

LovelySkin.com is one of the premier dermatologist-owned and operated skincare websites. They  carry thousands of skin care products for various skin concerns like acne, rosacea and hyperpigmentation. Many of their unique cosmeceuticals such as Obagi Nu Derm are only available through a dermatologist. Here’s what they say about these products.

Obagi

If you’re looking for results, you’re looking for Obagi. Obagi takes skin care to the next level by offering several condition-specific skin treatments that take a head-on approach in addressing the issues.

Obagi Nu Derm system is the top selling product on LovelySkin.com and we recommend it in office and on our website for patients with sun damage and signs of aging. The C-Rx System, with Professional-C Serums is a product line for mildly sun-damaged skin and typically is used for patients in their 20s and 30s, while the Nu-Derm is excellent for more sun damaged skin. Many of these products contain the proven power of hydroquinone 4% and can be compounded with tretinoin to achieve remarkable results.

Who is an ideal candidate for the Obagi Nu Derm System (steps 1-6)?
Obagi is typically recommended to those with pigmentation concerns, sun damage and scarring. It is a resurfacing product and is probably the most aggressive product line that we offer. It is normal to experience some peeling, flaking and irritation in the first 6-10 weeks of use, as the product is removing the upper damaged layers of skin. This system is not for sensitive skin types! A prescription form of Retin A is to be used with the Blender in the evening. If you are unable to get a prescription, we offer a variety of substitutes; however, they will not be as strong, but will be less irritating.
